Steve Roth - Founder, Sky’s The Limit Video & Photography
Photography has long been a passion of mine - a passion that began years ago as a hobby while working as a Master ticketed electrician in Alberta and British Columbia. During the recent pandemic, I rediscovered my love for both the aesthetics of photography and its technology and dedicated myself to launching Sky’s The Limit Video & Photography as a full-time professional venture.
For almost 20 years I’ve grown from dabbling in artistic photos and the first small primitive drones to becoming a licensed advanced drone pilot and implementing state-of-the-art 3D reality capture systems. As a photographer, I constantly challenge myself to learn and innovate by completing classes, technical certifications, and by partnering with customers on exciting new projects. I am proud to be a licensed drone pilot and continue my education and certification as well as keeping current with rules and regulations - all to achieve professional quality results for my clients that are not only stunning but done properly and safely. Whether it’s a large-scale project or a small customized shoot I want my clients to love what I can do for them and achieve the wow factor every time I put my drones up in the air, get that special shot, or generate an amazing 3D walkthrough. By bringing together the latest technology with the best in certified techniques I strive to exceed my clients’ expectations - the sky’s the limit!
While not everyone finds the technology behind the shots as fascinating as I do, I’m often asked about the equipment I use. Below are some of the usual suspects:
DJI Mavic 3 Quadcopter Drone - 46 min flight time, Canadian government approved to fly in controlled airspace and near people within 100 feet, offers up to 5.1K 50fps video and 20 MP pictures in RAW or JPEG, with adjustable aperture to get the perfect lighting in any situation. Co-engineered in partnership with Hasselblad, comes equipped with the all-new Hasselblad L2D-20c camera with Hasselblad's Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) and 4/3-in sensor. It is also equipped with a tele camera allowing us to capture 28X zoom. It is equipped with a state of the art omni-directional obstacle avoidance system that allows for safe lights indoors and out.
DJI Air 2S Quadcopter Drone - 30 min flight time, Canadian government approved to fly in controlled airspace and near people within 100 feet, offers up to 5.4K 30fps video and 20 MP photos. It is equipped with a state of the art omni-directional obstacle avoidance system that allows for safe lights indoors and out.
Nikon Z6 Mirrorless - 24.5 MP pictures and UHD 4K recording at up to 30p and can use the N-Log gamma profile along with the camera's 10-bit HDMI output to create cinema-quality video. Can shoot in RAW, JPEG or TIFF formats delivering outstanding image quality and speed with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200.
Nikon 28-300 Zoom lens - a powerful zoom lens optimized for FX-format cameras it offers outstanding sharpness for a broad zoom range while maintaining an f/5.6 aperture at the telephoto end. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.5 stops* of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.
Nikon 24-70 Lens - with a fast fixed aperture of f/2.8 across a 24–70mm zoom range, this lens provides both fine resolution and natural representation. A Nano Crystal Coat helps effectively reduce ghost and flare effects under harsh lighting for greater image clarity. Its Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet auto focusing without changing the length of the lens, so you can retain subject to working distance through the entire focus range.
NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S Lens - spanning an impressive wide-angle range, the NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S is an ultra-wide zoom for Nikon's FX-format Z-series mirrorless system. The broad field of view is especially well-suited to landscape, architectural, and astrophotography applications, and the constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains a consistent exposure throughout the zoom range. Smoothly go from an ultra-wide 14mm view to a more natural perspective of 30mm. Capture subjects less than a foot away with fully immersive backgrounds and expansive vistas with detail and sharpness from corner to far-reaching corner. The NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S is perfect for adding depth and drama to stills and video and its outstanding portability makes it an ideal partner for compact Z series cameras.
3D/360 Walkthroughs - iGUIDE System:
iGUIDE 3D tours include floor plans, 360° images, room dimensions, photos, and more. By using the iGUIDE PLANIX Pro hardware we can achieve the highest quality images for your walkthrough as well as floorplans that are laser-measured for superior accuracy. iGUIDE PLANIX Pro also has Theta lenses that have been calibrated by Planitar for the highest possible accuracy when measuring in 3D space using images.
Typical iGUIDE measurement uncertainty, in distance measurement on a floor plan, is 0.5% or better and the corresponding uncertainty in square footage is 1% or better. BOMA and Alberta RMS standards stipulate maximum square footage errors of 2% and iGUIDE easily meets these requirements.
iGUIDE also permits complete control over the 3D tour experience, including the image itself. The panoramas are fully editable: make skies blue, edit out personal photos on the wall, or Photoshop the patchwork that wasn’t completely finished for the booked appointment.
Complete walkthroughs are published as an iGUIDE Report that gives you everything you need in one convenient place: virtual tour links (branded and unbranded), downloadable image galleries, room dimensions, total floor areas, PDF floor plans, with advanced options to allow embedded links of interest (iGUIDE Tags) within a virtual tour.
The iGUIDE Report is formatted for easy sharing on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube or publishes to Google Street View, VRBO, and Realtor.com
